BREAKING NEWS: Senate Passes Workplace Gay Rights Bill With Bipartisan Support

Posted on November 8th, 2013.

On Thursday, the U.S. Senate approved a gay rights bill to ban workplace discrimination based on sexual preference or gender identity.  The bill applies to work sites with more than 15 employees.

Currently, federal laws ban employer discrimination based on race, color, sex, nationality, religion, age and disability.

Under the bill, religious organizations and the U.S. military are exempt under the Employer Non-Discrimination Act, a stipulation that helped win GOP support.  Senators opposing the bill expressed concerns that the protection for religious employers is insufficient.

Republican Sen. Dan Coats of Indiana said the legislation would force employers to violate their religious beliefs, a direct counter to rights embodied in the Constitution.

“There’s two types of discrimination here we’re dealing with, and one of those goes to the very fundamental right granted to every American through our Constitution, a cherished value of freedom of expression and religion,” Coats said.

At the Church Law Group, we will continue to monitor these important legal developments.
